Client Q&A: How ILM Level 5 Coaching and Mentoring Training Transformed Leadership Skills

Paul Tremble, Senior Engineering Leader - Jaguar Land Rover

Client: Paul Tremble, Senior Engineering Leader
Company: Jaguar Land Rover
Course: ILM Level 5 in Effective Coaching and Mentoring

Paul Tremble, a Senior Engineering Leader at Jaguar Land Rover, wanted to develop his coaching and mentoring skills to enhance his leadership impact. Through Agile Group’s ILM Level 5 Effective Coaching and Mentoring programme, he gained the confidence, structure, and practical tools to elevate his approach.

Here, Paul shares his experience, key takeaways, and the impact this training has had on his professional growth.

Q: What challenges or goals led you to seek out this training?

Paul: I wanted to deepen my understanding of coaching and mentoring and learn tools and techniques to make me a more impactful and confident coach and mentor. As a leader, I believe it’s my responsibility to support my peers and develop the next generation of leadership, both within Jaguar Land Rover and through my work as an external mentor.

Q: Why did you choose Agile Group’s ILM Level 5 programme?

Paul: I chose Agile Group because of their strong reputation for delivering high-quality coaching and mentoring programmes. The structure and content of the ILM Level 5 Effective Coaching and Mentoring programme seemed like the perfect fit for my needs.

Q: How would you describe your training experience?

Paul: I really enjoyed it. From day one, Naomi, our tutor, brought a great energy to every session. Her approachable teaching style and deep knowledge of the subject helped us fully understand the topics and course expectations.

The cohort was fantastic – diverse, engaged, and supportive. We even created a WhatsApp group to share resources and encouragement, which helped a lot.

I was initially worried about managing the coursework alongside a busy work and home life (I’m married, have three kids, and a dog!), but the structure of the three assignments, combined with Naomi’s availability for support and quick feedback, made it achievable.

“The provision of exemplar assignments and marking criteria, plus the option to submit drafts for feedback, really helped me progress with confidence.”

Q: What specific skills or tools did you gain from the programme?

Paul: The course really helped me master several coaching models like GROW and OSCAR, which I now use regularly. I also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of reflection and preparation for coaching sessions.

“The level of reflection post-session has improved considerably, which has boosted my confidence because I’m better prepared and learn more from each session.”

In addition, completing my Personal Development Plan (PDP) in the final module inspired me to set clear, actionable goals – and I’ve already achieved one of them!

Q: How have you applied these skills in your role?

Paul: I’ve started implementing the GROW and OSCAR models in my coaching sessions and introduced structured reflections and feedback time. I also shared my PDP with my peer coaching group to drive accountability and suggested they create their own PDPs.

On a broader scale, I’ve begun sharing my learnings with the internal coaching group at Jaguar Land Rover to further strengthen our coaching culture.

Q: What outcomes have you seen since completing the course?

Paul: My confidence has grown significantly. The improvements in preparation and reflection have made my sessions more impactful. I’ve also developed a much clearer structure for coaching and mentoring, which has been invaluable.

Although it’s early days for measurable outcomes, I’m keen to implement tools like the Kirkpatrick model, which I learned about during the programme, to track progress.

Q: How has this experience influenced your professional goals?

Paul: It’s reinforced my desire to do more coaching and people development as part of my career. The course has reignited my passion for learning, and I’d love to explore further qualifications – possibly ILM Level 7 – and gain more skills in team coaching.

Q: What stood out to you most about Agile Group’s delivery?

Paul: Naomi’s facilitation was fantastic. She made every session engaging and approachable. The balance of listening, doing, and discussing worked perfectly, and the additional practical sessions at the end were invaluable.

The graduation day was also a highlight. It gave me a positive incentive to meet the deadline, and it was great to celebrate our success face-to-face with my cohort and Naomi.

“The course was well-delivered, achievable around a busy work/home life, and gave me a solid foundation for coaching and mentoring.”

Q: Would you recommend Agile Group to others?

Paul: Absolutely. The programme was practical, well-structured, and transformative. I’ve gained skills and confidence that I can apply straight away, and it’s been a fantastic investment in my professional development.
